Via motherboard problems
There are known problems with older Via motherboards when using ivtv. Typically this is spontaneous reboots, but can also be system crashes as well. As far as we can tell the cause of the problem is a combination of two flaky DMA engines: that of the cx23415/16 MPEG processor and of the VIA chipset. There isn't anything that the driver can do about it.
Some people have found solutions or workarounds to the problem. One or more may work, although many users have had no luck. Try these before giving up:
- Update (flash) the motherboard BIOS to the latest version
- Underclock the CPU
- This is the process of setting the clock speed to a lower speed that it is rated for, and sometimes increases stability of a system.
- Remove all power management from the kernel, and add the following kernel options at boot time (eg: in grub.conf)
noapic nolapic pci=noacpi acpi=off
- At least one user has reported fixes from setting the following features in the BIOS:
Advanced Chipset Features - CPU
